Time and again, the incidents that threaten Oak Park youth in our community are primarily at the hands of police. Our Black and Brown kids are harassed regularly by police on our streets, where they are racially profiled, stopped without reason, and treated as second-class citizens. The Oak Park Police follow them into our schools in the form of “school resource officers,” disrupting their opportunities to learn and flourish in the peace and safety to which they are entitled. Our youth have cried out repeatedly to reduce the fear and harm that confront them at school by removing SROs.
It is time for the Oak Park community to act!
Recent events across the country and in our own backyard underscore the need for Oak Park to stop paying for SROs and for Oak Park District 97 and OPRFHS District 200 to move immediately to #PoliceFreeSchools.
With your help we can force our school districts to end their contract with the Village of Oak Park and the Oak Park Police Department. We must demand that they use those funds instead for services that provide our students with the resources they need for a quality education -- including improved access to counseling, mental health support, social workers and other services that help them thrive in school and in our community. In short, we need people in our schools whose professional focus is on our youth and their challenges and needs.
Send an email to our Village Board President, Village Trustees, the District 97 and District 200 Boards of Education, School Superintendents and School Principals by completing this form today.
